About Us

"The International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and Findings" is the yearbook founded and published by the Department of the History of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Ukraine (the Institute of History of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). In the late 1940's  on the basis of this Department corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine  F.P. Shevchenko (1914-1995), I.M. Mel'nykova (1918-2010) and P.S. Sokhan' (1926-2013) created "the Historical European Studies" Ukrainian academic school.
Since 1991, S.V. Vidnyanskyj (Doctor of History, Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Science and Engineering Worker of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology) leads the aforementioned academic school, which is developing an interdisciplinary research direction of World History. The academic school specializes in:

  • developing the theory and methodology in European History studies;
  • the History and current problems of European International Relations and Foreign Policy;
  • the History of Ukraine's and Ukrainian people's international relations, in particular, coverage of the Ukrainian presence in the Central-Eastern Europe geopolitical space and in the cultural and civilizational space of Europe at large;
  • Ukraine's foreign policy since independence, providing scientific basis for the European choice of Ukraine and studying its experience in joining the European integration process and creating a positive image for Ukraine worldwide, particularly, in the European Union;
  • the Recent History and the European integration experience of foreign European States, in particular, of Ukraine's Western neighbours.

With a view to coordinating efforts of this academic school's representatives in studying current issues of European History, in 1975-1989 on I. M. Mel'nykova's initiative the department published the "Historical research. History of foreign countries" interagency collected scientific papers, which at that time was the only academic periodical on World History in Ukraine. In 1991 P.S. Sokhan' initiated publication of "the International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and Findings". A new periodical, the editorial board of which is headed by S.V. Vidnyanskyj, has evolved to become an authoritative scientific yearbook on the History of International Relations and World History, well known abroad, particularly in Europe, through its substantial and various papers on European History.

"The International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and Findings" highlights relevant problems of World History and International Relations, key issues of methodology, historiography and source studies. Special attention is paid to insufficiently examined questions of the contemporary history of Central and Eastern Europe, international relations since the Great War and participation of Ukraine in them. This collection of studies provides historical research, dedicated to the international relations of Ukraine and Ukrainians, their importance in the context of European and World History, as well as the evolution of independent Ukrainian State's foreign policy, its place and role in the global international relations system. It regularly presents news about the scholarly life, publishes proceedings from international scientific conferences, reviews of new monographs and textbooks on World History.

The yearbook focuses on the promotion and coordination of theoretical and methodological research on World History, on the transformation of conceptual frameworks of historical cognitions and historiography according to the latest scientific trends, and especially on the reflection on key issues of Ukraine's history in the context of world-historical process.

Editorial board, reviewers' group and writing team are made up of scholars not only from the Institute, but also well-known specialists of academic institutions and higher education establishments of Ukraine and foreign States, in particular, the Czech Republic, the French Republic, Hungary, the Italian Republic, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Republic of Poland, the Slovak Republic, the Swiss Confederation and so on.
