Institute of Social Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Institute of History of Ukraine of the NAS of Ukraine prepared an Ukrainian-Slovak joint research project. Project title: Ukraine and Slovakia in European History: Common Past and Present

Description of the project: (Scientific importance and originality of the project) During this Project implementation on the basis of the best scientific methodology, considering the present state of historical knowledge, attracting new historical sources it is planned to analyse and compile common historical processes: establishing national identities of the Ukrainians and Slovaks in the Middle Ages, national and cultural awakening of the Ukrainians and Slovaks within the Habsburg Monarchy and the Russian Empire and their interrelations, actualization of the Ukrainian and Slovak Questions in international relations during and after the First World War, struggle of the Ukrainians and Slovaks for national statehood in the inter-war period and Ukrainian and Slovak dimensions of the Second World War, State-building processes in Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia - Carpatho-Ukraine, development of Ukraine and Slovakia during the post-war years and establishment of Ukrainian-Slovak transborder cooperation, role and place of the Ruthenian-Ukrainian and Slovak national minorities in the development of Ukrainian-Slovak relations at the present time, participation of independent Ukraine and Slovakia in enhancing the European integration.

Project objectives: Research activities with a view to highlighting common key issues of the History of Ukraine and Slovakia and Ukrainian-Slovak relations from the Middle Ages to present times in the context of the European History, identification of directions for further historical researches, historiography and source studies.

Expected/Intended results and benefits: the discussion of topical issues of the History of Ukraine and Slovakia and Ukrainian-Slovak relations in the context of landmark events in the European History at an expanded meeting of the Commission of Historians of Ukraine and Slovakia. The proceedings of this meeting are due to be published in a special issue of the interagency collected scientific papers "International Relations of Ukraine: scientific searches and findings", which would help to increase scientific understanding and develop integrated research of key events and common processes of the history of the Ukrainian and Slovak peoples.
